What is an All-on-4?
The All-on-4 is a dental implant procedure whereby all of the teeth in the jaw are replaced by an arch of prosthetic teeth attached to four dental implants. The procedure was pioneered by Portuguese implantologist Dr. Paulo Malo several decades ago and it is now carried out across the world to his exact protocol, which is very successful.
What is the Treatment Process for All-on-4?
The All-on-4 is sometimes referred to as Teeth in a Day. The surgery to place the implants and the attachment of the arch of teeth takes place in the same surgical session. If a patient has any teeth that need removing, the extractions are also carried out at the same time. The procedure requires meticulous planning. You will have a consultation with one of our experts who will perform a thorough examination and arrange for appropriate scans to be taken of your mouth and jaw. If you are considered to be a good candidate, impressions of your mouth are taken and sent to a laboratory that will make your new teeth by hand and return them to us so we can fit them on the day of your procedure.
Am I a Suitable Candidate for the All-on-4?
Bone Loss
The All-on-4 is a suitable procedure for many patients where individual implants would not be suitable because of bone loss. This is because there are four implants rather than one, and it may well be that even if there is patchy bone loss in the jaw that the implants can be positioned where the jawbone is healthy. Furthermore, there is greater bone-to-implant contact in the rear implants in the All-on-4 because they are longer and positioned at a more acute angle in the jaw. This increases stability and provides a strong base for the arch of teeth to affix securely.
Health
Good health is important for dental implants and some medical conditions may prove problematic for the All-on-4 procedure. Hemophilia and diabetes are two chronic conditions that may require a little more investigation to ensure that the treatment will be a success in these patients. Each case is looked at on a case-by-case basis, and if the condition is managed well there is every reason that the All-on-4 procedure can go ahead.
Smoking
People who smoke are not suitable candidates for dental implants. The failure rate after implants have been placed as being much higher in people who smoke in comparison to those who don't. Smoking diminishes blood flow around the body so essential nutrients cannot get to where they are needed. This causes a problem for dental implants when they have first been placed because this could leave them open to infection that could compromise the healing process.
