Ways You May Harm Your Oral Health and Not Even Know ItWe're all familiar with the importance of maintaining good oral health, and one of the best ways to do so is to regularly brush and floss whenever possible.

Maintaining good oral health is essential in keeping the harmful bacteria that is constantly growing in your mouth from causing tooth decay and gum disease, however, even if you do brush and floss regularly, your oral health may be in jeopardy due to lesser known causes of tooth decay and gum disease.

How Your Teeth Could Be Harmed

The first way your oral health can be harmed is by eating the incorrect foods. Foods can both physically and biologically affect the health of our mouth.

Physically, foods that are hard or acidic are rough on the mouth and wear enamel down quicker than normal. Enamel protects the sensitive dentin underneath our teeth, and when it's exposed it can allow the teeth to decay more quickly.

Biologically, food plays an important role in keeping your mouth healthy. The right vitamins and minerals need to be consumed every day for your teeth to be as strong as possible, and without them, your teeth can suffer premature decay.

Another way you can harm your oral health is by partaking in tobacco products. Many people associate tobacco with bad lungs, but tobacco can be very harmful to your oral health. If you smoke, your mouth may be constantly dry.

Dryness in your mouth allows for bacteria to multiply more easily which can cause faster tooth decay. Also, tobacco use has been linked to gum disease, and many people who use chewing tobacco often suffer from gum loss.
