How Often Should a Patient Have a Dental Exam and Cleaning?Dental exams and cleaning are necessary for a patient to make early recognition, diagnosis, and timely prevention of any dental infection and disease. The recommended standard dental exam and cleaning time is six months for all patients. However, the risk level of dental and oral infection determines how often a patient should have a dental checkup.

There are different categories of patients of varying risk category levels. The dental risk level determines the depth and length of developing dental diseases such as tooth decay or gum disease. Below we explain the number of times you should have a dental exam and cleaning depending on the level of risk.

Low Risk

Patients with low-risk dental diseases have never suffered dental issues such as cavities and gum disease for five years or above. Therefore, for this patient taking a dental exam and dental cleaning once a year is necessary to prevent dental diseases.

Medium Risk

If you have suffered from medium to severe periodontal and gingivitis diseases within the last five years or had a filling taking a dental exam and cleaning approximately twice a year is essential. Gum diseases and tooth decay take six months to develop in medium-risk patients; thus, having an exam and dental cleaning after six months will help prevent dental diseases.

High Risk

Patients with high-risk dental situations should take a dental exam and dental cleaning every two to three months in a year. Patients suffering from periodontitis risk having affected teeth and gums; thus, cleaning every two months helps identify any lesion spots and removes the plaque and tartar that are challenging to remove.

Generally, the above categories of risks will help you know how many times you need to see a dentist and if you haven't visited a dentist for a while, book an appointment with us today.
